Under Første Verdenskrig blev stedet hårdt ødelagt. Kemmelberg, der ligger 1,5 km sydvest for landsbyen, var et militærstrategisk vigtigt punkt og blev derfor heftig kæmpet om. Under den fjerde slag ved Flandern, der begyndte den 7. april 1918, indtog tyske tropper rester af landsbyen og Kemmelberg den 25. april.
