Slusen i Astene og dens bro blev bygget i 1860 på den nyudgravede rute af Lys. På den anden side ligger de noble herregårde, der er knyttet til slusen. Siden det 19. århundrede har de pittoreske omgivelser været en uudtømmelig inspirationskilde for kunstnere. En af de mest kendte var Emile Claus (1849-1924). Han boede i Astene og malede slusen i impressionistisk stil.
