L'ecluse di Astene e il suo ponte furono costruiti nel 1860 lungo il percorso appena scavato della Lys. Dall'altra parte si trovano le nobili case padronali legate all'ecluse. Sin dal XIX secolo, i dintorni pittoreschi costituiscono una fonte di ispirazione inesauribile per gli artisti. Uno dei più noti fu Emile Claus (1849-1924). Visse ad Astene e dipinse l'ecluse in stile impressionista.
