Aalst er mest kendt for sit årlige karneval og også for sin 'Sort Mand', statuen af Dirk Martens i midten af Grote Markt. Dirk Martens trykte den første bog med løse bogstaver i Nederlandene. En lige så berømt efterkommer er romanfatteren Louis Paul Boon. Aalst gjorde i begyndelsen af det 20. århundrede også et bidrag til den belgiske politiske historie med præsten Adolf Daens som central figur, om hvem Louis Paul Boon i øvrigt skrev sin mest berømte bog 'Pieter Daens eller hvordan arbejderne i Aalst kæmpede mod fattigdom og uretfærdighed' (1971). Aalst skyldte tidligere en del af sin velstand til humledyrkning. Katedralen i Amiens var forbilledet for Aalst's Sankt Martin-kirke, som dog ikke blev færdiggjort. (kilde: wikipedia)
