Af de fire arter af vandrende salamandre, som vi har i Flandern, er det kam salamander, der mest fanger fantasien. Vores største vand salamander er desuden europæisk beskyttet. I Wellen findes 'vanddragen' stadig i fire zoner. En af disse zoner er naturområdet De Grote Beemd. Limburgs Landskab vzw har i de seneste år ladet etablere et netværk af vandhuller i Grote Beemd. Forhåbentlig kan de derfor i fremtiden igen sprede sig over Herkdal. Et småskala landskab med fiskefrie vandhuller eller damme, hække, buskads, rørskove og fældede træer danner det ideelle livsmiljø for denne art.
