Des quatre espèces de tritons en Flandre, c’est le triton crêté qui fait le plus appel à l’imagination. Notre plus grand triton est également protégé en Europe. À Wellen, le « dragon d’eau » se trouve encore dans quatre zones. L’une de ces zones est la réserve naturelle De Grote Beemd. Ces dernières années, l’asbl Limburgs Landschap a fait construire un réseau d’étangs sur la Grand-Bretagne. Espérons qu’ils pourront à nouveau se répandre dans la vallée de Herk à l’avenir. Un paysage à petite échelle avec des mares ou des étangs sans poissons, des haies, des lisières boisées, des roselières et des rangées de têtards constitue l’habitat idéal pour cette espèce.
