I romertiden lå her en bosættelse: Agaunum. Her skulle ifølge legenden massehenrettelsen af det tebaanske legion have fundet sted, hvilket historikere slet ikke kan bekræfte. I skatkammere fra Skt. Mauritius' kloster opbevares utallige kunstskatte, herunder relikvier fra disse hellige. Også den såkaldte akvamanile fra Karl den Store, en udsmykket guldkande fra det 9. århundrede, findes her.
Saint-Maurice ligger både ved Rhône og ved E27. Der ligger en togstation ved jernbanen Lausanne - Brig, Saint-Maurice Station.
