L'Isle nævnes første gang i 1216 som Chablie. I 1299 blev det nævnt som Insula de Chablie og i 1324 som Lylaz.
L'Isle har et areal, pr. 2009, på 16,21 kvadratkilometer. Af dette areal er 7,78 km2 eller 48,0% brugt til landbrugsformål, mens 7,57 km2 eller 46,7% er skovklædt. Af resten af jorden er 0,87 km2 eller 5,4% bebygget og 0,04 km2 eller 0,2% er uproduktivt land.
