Det blev grundlagt i 1861 med det formål at give både amatører mulighed for at studere musik og – ved Haute École de Musique de Lausanne – uddanne fremtidige professionelle musikere. Siden 1990 har konserveringen været placeret i lokalerne i de tidligere Galeries de Commerce i bydelen Saint-François. HEMU er en del af University of Applied Sciences i det vestlige Schweiz.
Konservatoriet har i øjeblikket tre afdelinger, en for klassisk musik, en højskole for jazz og en musikkole. Omkring 300 studerende studerer klassisk musik, omkring 60 jazz, og 1200 elever besøger musikkolen.
