Tegernsee er et populært og luksuriøst feriested; især Rottach-Egern er et dyrt sted med luksusbutikker og flere femstjernede hoteller. Tegernsee forsynes af Weißach, samt af en række mindre bække. Ved Gmund am Tegernsee strømmer Mangfall ud af søen for at munde ud i Inn ved Rosenheim, 58 kilometer længere. Søen blev dannet for ca. 18.000 år siden under Weichsel-istiden, kaldet Würmistiden i Tyskland, af Tegernsee-gletsjeren.
