Le Tegernsee est une station balnéaire populaire et luxueuse ; en particulier Rottach-Egern est un endroit cher avec des magasins de luxe et plusieurs hôtels cinq étoiles. Le Tegernsee est alimenté par la Weißach, ainsi que par un certain nombre de petits ruisseaux. À Gmund am Tegernsee, la Mangfall s'écoule du lac pour se jeter dans l'Inn à Rosenheim, 58 kilomètres plus loin. Le lac a été formé il y a environ 18 000 ans pendant la période glaciaire de Weichsel, appelée période glaciaire de Würm en Allemagne, par le glacier de Tegernsee.
