Edersee-dæmningen blev ødelagt i natten mellem den 16. og 17. maj 1943 som en del af Operation Chastise, ved et bombeangreb fra britterne. Dette forårsagede enorme ødelæggelser. En flodbølge med bølger på 6-8 meter skyllede gennem dalen op til 30 km nedstrøms.
