Geografisk tilhører Lützen den Leipziger lavlandsbugt. Byen ligger cirka 10 kilometer sydvest for Leipzigs bygrænse ved Bundesstraße 87, der fører fra Weißenfels over Lützen og Markranstädt til Leipzig. Derudover er Lützen forbundet med motorvejen A 9 via tilslutningspunktet Bad Dürrenberg og med A 38 via tilslutningspunktet Lützen.
Byen Lützen har siden det 13. århundrede været en del af indflydelsesområdet for det høje bispedømme Merseburg og var sæde for biskoppens embede i Lützen. Gennem sekulariseringen af bispedømmet Merseburg kom byen Lützen med embede til kurfyrstendømmet Sachsen.
