Geografisch gehört Lützen zur Leipziger Tieflandsbucht. Die Stadt liegt etwa 10 Kilometer südwestlich der Stadtgrenze Leipzigs an der Bundesstraße 87, die von Weißenfels über Lützen und Markranstädt nach Leipzig führt. Außerdem ist Lützen über die Anschlussstelle Bad Dürrenberg an die Bundesautobahn 9 und über die Anschlussstelle Lützen an die A 38 angeschlossen.
Die Stadt Lützen gehörte seit dem 13. Jahrhundert zum Einflussbereich des Hochstifts Merseburg und war Sitz des bischöflichen Amts Lützen. Durch die Säkularisation des Bistums Merseburg gelangte die Stadt Lützen mit dem Amt Lützen an das Kurfürstentum Sachsen.
