Wahrenholz ligger mellem naturparkerne Südheide og Elm-Lappwald ved Ise. Kommunen tilhører samkommunen Wesendorf, der har sit administrationssæde i kommunen Wesendorf.
Efter slaveopstanden i 983 blev situationen i det østlige Niedersachsen skærpet. Bernward af Hildesheim måtte efter sin tiltrædelse som biskop i Hildesheim prioritere sikringen af grænserne for sit bispedømme. I perioden fra 994 til 997 byggede han Mundburg og borgen Wahrenholz som palisadeborge ved Aller og Ise, som sandsynligvis var del af en række grænseforsvarsanlæg mod overfald fra slaver. I et dokument fra Henrik II. fra 1013 blev han bekræftet i ejerskabet af borgen og borgevåben Wahrenholz.
