Kommunen grænser med uret i urets retning fra nordvest til kommunerne Holzminden, Hildesheim, Goslar og Göttingen samt til kommunen Kassel og til kommunen Höxter. Den vest-østlige udstrækning er ca. 48 km, fra nord til syd er det 45 km.
En særegenhed er landsbyen Fürstenhagen, der tilhører byen Uslar. Fürstenhagen er en eksklave af Landkreis Northeim, da landsbyen er næsten tre fjerdedele omkranset af Landkreis Kassel og cirka en fjerdedel af Landkreis Göttingen. Den eneste vejforbindelse til Fürstenhagen fører fra Landkreis Northeim gennem den hessiske landsby Heisebeck. Fra Landkreis Göttingen kan man derimod kun nå landsbyen via skovstier.
