Freren er en lille by i den vestlige del af Niedersachsen. Grundcentret ligger i den tidligere Landkreis Lingen, som i dag omfatter den sydlige del af Großlandkreis Emsland.
I byen, der strækker sig over 48,99 km², bor godt 5.000 indbyggere. Freren har været sæde for den ligeså kaldte Samtgemeinde siden 1974. Byrettighederne blev givet til Freren i 1723 af den preussiske konge Friedrich Wilhelm I., den ældste dokumenterede omtale af bosættelsen stammer fra det 9. århundrede.
