Kirchgellersen ligger mellem naturreservaterne Lüneburger Heide og Elbufer-Drawehn. Kommunen tilhører samkommune Gellersen, som har sit administrationssæde i kommunen Reppenstedt.
I Kirchgellersen blev et værktøj fra en neandertaler fundet, hvis alder blev vurderet til 34.000 til 100.000 år. I det 3. årtusinde f.Kr. blev højgraven De swatte Barg anlagt. Begravelsesgaver som sølv- og bronzefibler, skrabere og knoglereder blev udgravet i slutningen af det 19. århundrede. I byen blev en romersk guldmønt fra kejser Valentinian II. fundet.
