Kirchgellersen si trova tra le riserve naturali della Heide di Lüneburg e della riva dell'Elba-Drawehn. Il comune fa parte della comunità di Gellersen, che ha la sua sede amministrativa nel comune di Reppenstedt.
A Kirchgellersen è stato trovato uno strumento di un Neanderthal, il cui età è stata stimata tra i 34.000 e i 100.000 anni. Nel III millennio a.C. è stata realizzata la tomba a tumulo De swatte Barg. I doni, come fibule di argento e bronzo, rasoi e pettini di osso, sono stati rinvenuti alla fine del XIX secolo. Nel paese è stata trovata una moneta d'oro romana dell'imperatore Valentiniano II.
