Bydelen opdeles i den næppe længere mærkbare historiske del, boligområdet 'Kolonie', det nye kraftværksboligområde i øst og bosættelsen 'Pöplitz' i vest.
Zschornewitz blev første gang nævnt i år 1200 i et dokument fra sognet Wörlitz. Den sene romanske kirke vidner om de tidlige dage i landsbyen. Orten tilhørte indtil 1815 det kursaksiske amt Gräfenhainichen. Gennem beslutningerne fra Wienerkongressen kom det til Preussen og blev i 1816 tildelt Kreis Bitterfeld i det regeringsområde Merseburg i provinsen Sachsen, som det hørte til indtil 1944.
