El distrito se divide en la parte histórica apenas perceptible, la colonia de trabajadores 'Kolonie', la nueva colonia de la central eléctrica en el este y la colonia 'Pöplitz' en el oeste.
Zschornewitz fue mencionado por primera vez en el año 1200 en un documento de la parroquia de Wörlitz. La iglesia de estilo románico tardío da testimonio de los primeros días del pueblo. El lugar perteneció hasta 1815 a la oficina del duque de Sajonia, Gräfenhainichen. A través de las decisiones del Congreso de Viena, pasó a Prusia y en 1816 fue asignado al distrito de Bitterfeld en el distrito administrativo de Merseburg de la provincia de Sajonia, al que perteneció hasta 1944.
