Området Ellhöft strækker sig lige syd for de begyndende bække, der markerer den tysk-danske grænse, nemlig Süderau og Alte Au, i overgangsområdet mellem naturtyperne Lecker Geest og Nordfriesische Marsch. Bækkene fungerer som afløb til den nordschleswigske Wiedau.
Området har været beboet siden stenalderen. Stedet Ellhöft blev første gang nævnt skriftligt i 1543. Stednavnet består af det danske El for ahorn og -hoved for en fremspring. Böglum blev første gang nævnt i 1497 og kan føres tilbage til gammeldansk boghi eller bōk.
