The municipality of Ellhöft extends directly south of the streams of the Süderau and Alte Au, which mark the German-Danish border, in the transition area of the natural regions of Lecker Geest and North Frisian Marsh. The streams are drainage channels to the North Schleswig Wiedau.
The municipality has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The place Ellhöft was first mentioned in writing in 1543. The name of the place consists of Danish El for alder and -hoved for a promontory. Böglum was first mentioned in 1497 and can be traced back to Old Danish boghi or bōk.
