Kommunen ligger i naturparken Hessische Rhön nordøst for Wasserkuppe på 460 til 800 meters højde i Ulstertal, 30 km øst for Fulda. Mod øst grænser kommunen op til Thüringen.
Hilders grænser mod nord op til byen Tann, mod øst op til byen Kaltennordheim og kommunerne Oberweid, Frankenheim og Birx, mod syd op til kommunerne Ehrenberg og Poppenhausen, og mod vest op til kommunen Hofbieber.
