Il comune si trova nel parco naturale della Rhön hessiana, a nord-est della Wasserkuppe, a un'altezza compresa tra 460 e 800 metri nell'Ulstertal, 30 km a est di Fulda. A est, il comune confina con la Turingia.
Hilders confina a nord con la città di Tann, a est con la città di Kaltennordheim e con i comuni di Oberweid, Frankenheim e Birx, a sud con i comuni di Ehrenberg e Poppenhausen e a ovest con il comune di Hofbieber.
