Braunfels er kendt for sit slot, som siden det 13. århundrede har været residens for greverne af Solms.
Byen Braunfels ligger i den østlige Hintertaunus på en højde af cirka 240 meter, 2 km syd for Lahndalen, 10 km vest for kredsbyen Wetzlar.
