Alsterdorf ligger ved den navngivne Alster, som flyder gennem bydelen fra nordøst til sydvest. Med uret grænser Alsterdorf mod øst op til bydelen Ohlsdorf, mod syd op til Winterhude og Eppendorf samt mod vest op til Groß Borstel.
Alsterdorf blev første gang nævnt i 1219 som „Alsterthorpe“ og har siden det 14. århundrede vekslende været en del af klosteret Harvestehude samt det holstenske amt Trittau og kom således i 1773 under dansk forvaltning. I 1803 kom det ved bytte mod Bilsen nær Quickborn endeligt i hamburgers eje, hvormed byen kunne lukke det sidste område i sit Alsterbesiddelse. Siden 1830 har det tilhørt landherrenskabet Geestlandet.
