Alsterdorf se encuentra en la Alster que le da nombre, que atraviesa el distrito de noreste a suroeste. En el sentido de las agujas del reloj, Alsterdorf limita al este con el distrito de Ohlsdorf, al sur con Winterhude y Eppendorf, y al oeste con Groß Borstel.
Alsterdorf fue mencionado por primera vez en 1219 como "Alsterthorpe" en documentos, y desde el siglo XIV perteneció alternativamente al monasterio de Harvestehude y a la oficina de Trittau en Holstein, pasando así a estar bajo la administración danesa en 1773. En 1803, llegó a ser finalmente propiedad hamburguesa en un intercambio por Bilsen cerca de Quickborn, con lo cual la ciudad pudo cerrar la última laguna territorial de su propiedad en la Alster. Desde 1830, pertenecía a la administración territorial de Geestlande.
