Den højre bredden af Duisburgs bydel Laar ligger nord for Ruhr, mellem Ruhrort og Beeck, og tilhører Duisburg bydel Meiderich/Beeck. Laar har 6.495 indbyggere og ligger direkte ved Rhinen.
Navnet Laar stammer sandsynligvis fra hlar, hvilket betyder "græsningsplads". Laar blev første gang nævnt i 1280 i et dokument fra Hamborn-klosteret, der omhandler fiskerettighederne. Det næstældste dokument fra 1282 omhandler ejendomsforholdene, som tidligere havde tilhørt Mechthild fra Holten, som solgte gården Laar i Beeck-området til cistercienserklosteret i Sterkrade.
