De rechtsvan de Rijn gelegen stadsdeel Laar in Duisburg ligt ten noorden van de Rijn, tussen Ruhrort en Beeck, en maakt deel uit van het Duisburgse stadsdistrict Meiderich/Beeck. Laar heeft 6.495 inwoners en ligt direct aan de Rijn.
De naam Laar is waarschijnlijk afgeleid van hlar, wat ongeveer "weideplaats" betekent. Laar werd voor het eerst genoemd in 1280 in een akte van de abdij Hamborn, die de visserijrechten behandelt. De op een na oudste akte van 1282 behandelt de eigendomsverhoudingen, die tot dan toe bij Mechthild van Holten lagen, die de hof Laar in het ambt Beeck vervolgens aan het klooster van de cisterciënzers in Sterkrade verkocht.
