Den første dokumenterede omtale går tilbage til 1234. Navnet stammer fra en slægt "von Barle", der i århundreder boede nær Paschmannshof på Haus Baerl. Navnet Baerl er afledt af Barlo: Bar/Ber = Vildsvin, Lo/Loh = Skov og relaterer sig til Baerler Busch, der ligger i vest for byen. Den nuværende evangeliske landsbykirke blev bygget i det 12. århundrede.
