Schmallenberg var i det 19. århundrede centrum for metalindustrien. Derefter udviklede tekstilindustrien sig her. Byens kælenavn, "Strumpfstadt", henviser til tekstilaktiviteten hos firmaet Falke, der her fremstiller sokker. I dag arbejder omkring en fjerdedel af befolkningen i skovbruget, skovbrug og turisme. Schmallenberg har mange vandrestier rundt om byen, der fører ind i skovene og bakkerne. I alt mere end 2.500 km.
