Kernbyen Petershagen, altså Petershagen uden de omkringliggende, tilhørende landsbyer, ligger med undtagelse af få huse fra "Brückenkopf" umiddelbart vest for Weser ved udløbet af Ösper. Overfor, på den østlige bred ligger Petershagen-Lahde.
Indtil 31. december 1972 var Petershagen en by i Petershagen Kommune og sæde for kommunens administration. Den 1. januar 1973 blev den sammenlægget med flere kommuner til den nye, betydeligt større by Petershagen.
