Coppenbrügge blev første gang nævnt skriftligt omkring år 1000 i en grænsebeskrivelse af bispedømmet Hildesheim som Cobbanbrug. Den 9. marts 1062 gav kejser Heinrich IV. biskop Hezilo af Hildesheim skovretten ved Coppenbrügge. Omkring 1200 byggede grev Bernhard von Poppenburg, som boede på slotte Poppenburg, Spiegelburg nær Lauenstein. Derefter kaldte han sig selv Bernhard von Poppenburg og Spiegelberg. Spiegelburg blev bygget i dalen mellem Ith og Osterwald ved den gamle hær- og handelsvej nær et sumpområde. Vejen var Hellweg, der førte fra Aachen til Königsberg. Derefter var det kejservejen 1 og i dag motorvejen 1. Fra 1217 kaldte grev Bernhard sig kun "von Spiegelberg".
