Den blev bygget omkring 1230 af Otto I. af Schaumberg, som fra da af kaldte sig selv Otto von Schauenstein efter sin nye borg i Frankenwald. Han havde været ministerial for hertugerne af Andechs-Meranien siden 1222 og døde i 1237. Hans søn Eberhard I. og hans barnebørn Tuto og Heinrich III. af Schauenstein ejede borgen indtil 1271. Derefter gik borg og domstol i Schauenstein videre til Heinrichs datter. Hun giftede sig med Konrad von Wolfstriegel, hvilket medførte, at Schauenstein kom under denne slægts eje og dermed ind i indflydelsesområdet for vogterne af Weida og senere til burggrafen af Nürnberg. Derefter blev den sæde for embedsmændene i Brandenburg-Kulmbach, hvis første var Erhart von Machwitz.
Borgen har siden 1988 været sæde for Oberfränkisches Feuerwehrmuseum og Heimatmuseum Schauenstein.
