Winterberg ligger i midten af Rothaargebirge. Denne lave bjergkæde er ikke højere end 850 meter. Navnet skulle stamme fra Rod-Hard-Bjerget. Det skal betyde, at skovene på disse bjergkæder for det meste er blevet fældet. Det er en del af det Rheniske Skiferbjerg. Bjergene er rige på mineraler. Nær Winterberg er der for eksempel fundet sølv.
