Winterberg is located in the middle of the Rothaar Mountain range. This low mountain range is no higher than 850 meters. The name is believed to originate from Rod-Hard Mountains, which means that the forests on these mountain ranges have largely been cleared. It is part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. The mountain range is rich in minerals. Near Winterberg, for example, silver was found.
