Kraftværket tilhørte byværkernes konsortium Rhein-Ruhr og blev bygget af Steag fra 1938 til 1941 for at forsyne et nærliggende aluminiumværk. Den daværende kapacitet var 180 megawatt. I 1962 blev det omdøbt til Kraftværk Kellermann efter Hermann Kellermann. Den 25. september 1968 blev det 250 meter høje skorstens færdiggjort, på dette tidspunkt den højeste skorsten i Europa.
