La centrale elettrica apparteneva al consorzio dei servizi pubblici Rhein-Ruhr ed è stata costruita dalla Steag tra il 1938 e il 1941 per fornire energia a un vicino stabilimento di alluminio. La potenza dell'epoca era di 180 megawatt. Nel 1962, fu rinominata in centrale Kellermann in onore di Hermann Kellermann. Il 25 settembre 1968 fu completato il camino alto 250 metri della centrale, che in quel momento era il camino più alto d'Europa.
