Sielbyen ligger direkte ved Leybugten, en lille bugt på den ostfrisiske vestkyst. Store dele af bugten er gradvist blevet inddiget, så Greetsiel i dag er den eneste havneby ved Leybugten. Til Greetsiel hører også den nærliggende by Hauen og den på en høj beliggende beboelsesplads Akkens, som begge ligger vest for landsbyen.
