El lugar de Siel está situado directamente en la bahía de Ley, una pequeña bahía en la costa occidental de Frisia Oriental. Grandes partes de la bahía se han saneado gradualmente, de modo que Greetsiel es hoy el único puerto en la bahía de Ley. A Greetsiel también pertenecen la localidad vecina de Hauen y el asentamiento de Akkens, que se encuentra en un montículo, ambos al oeste del pueblo.
