I 1880 besluttede Ernst Kalkuhl, der kom fra Remscheid, efter selv at have indsamlet erfaringer som lærer i England og Frankrig i privatskoleverdenen, at starte en egen skole for drenge i Oberkassel nær Bonn, det dengang "Institut Kalkuhl", som fik sin statslige anerkendelse i 1891. Ernst Kalkuhls svigersøn, Franz Heel fra Nürnberg, overtog skoleledelsen i 1916 og efter Ernst Kalkuhls død i 1918 skoleansvaret. Han beholdt det indtil sin død i 1957. I Weimarrepublikken, i 1924, fik den daværende Oberrealschule ret til at afholde studentereksamen med fuld statslig anerkendelse i eget hus.
