In 1880 besloot de uit Remscheid afkomstige Ernst Kalkuhl, nadat hij zelf als leraar in Engeland en Frankrijk ervaring had opgedaan in het privéonderwijs, in Oberkassel bij Bonn een eigen school voor jongens op te richten, het toenmalige „Institut Kalkuhl“, dat in 1891 zijn staatserkenning ontving. De schoonzoon van Ernst Kalkuhl, Franz Heel uit Neurenberg, nam in 1916 de leiding van de school over en in 1918, na de dood van Ernst Kalkuhl, de verantwoordelijkheid voor de school. Hij behield deze tot aan zijn dood in 1957. In de Weimarrepubliek, in 1924, kreeg de toenmalige Oberrealschule het recht om het Abitur met volledige staatserkenning in eigen huis af te nemen.
