I den imponerende Kroningssal blev der i århundreder holdt festmåltider til ære for nykårede konger. Mellem 813 og 1531 blev ikke færre end 31 tyske konger kronet i Aachen – et bevis på byens og dens rådhus' betydning i den europæiske historie. I dag uddeles den Internationale Karlpris årligt i denne sal til personer, der arbejder for europæisk enhed.
