Hovedbanegården i Passau blev bygget i 1860 af det aktieselskab, der drev de bayerske østbaner. Den lå dengang stadig på området af kommunen St. Nikola, som først kom til Passau i 1870. Den har seks perronspor, herunder et stikspor og tre gennemkørselsspor. Den ca. 130 m lange bygning er opført i klassicistisk stil. I gennemsnit bruger ca. 6.500 passagerer denne station pr. dag. I gennemsnit ankommer 77 tog dagligt til stationen. I alt ansatte DB AG 90 medarbejdere på stationen.
Stationen er i dag stoppested for ICE- og IC-tog i langdistancetrafik samt regionaltrafik fra DB AG og ÖBB samt nattransport med Nightjet-tog fra ÖBB.
