I 1241 blev der første gang refereret til en køb- og skuehal på stedet for det nuværende rådhus. For den vestlige side blev der i 1999 udgravet seks kælderrum med tunnelformet loft fra forgængeren fra første halvdel af det 14. århundrede. Der findes få øvrige rester af forgængeren, men der blev opført en ny bygning i årene 1526 til 1552, efter at bybranden i 1526 havde ødelagt forgængeren.
Fra 1914 til 1917 fandt en fornyelse sted efter planer af Otto Stiehl, hvor blandt andet øst- og vestgavle blev tilføjet, og arkaderne blev åbnet mod buegange. Fra 1998 til 1999 fandt den hidtil sidste omfattende renovering sted.
