Lemvig er en 750 år gammel markedsby og modtog sit kommunale charter i 1545. Et af vartegnene i Lemvig er byens kirke fra det 13. århundrede. Den gamle by ligger mellem Limfjorden, en sø og nogle bakker. Den lokale topografi blev formet under den sidste istid.
Byen ligger 10 kilometer fra Nordsøen og 375 kilometer fra København.
Lemvig har en græslandingsbane.
