Kommunen omfatter den centrale del af landets hovedstad, København inklusive øen Amager, men eksklusive kommunen Frederiksberg, som er omgivet af kommunen København. Efter årtier med stagnerende befolkningstilvækst er antallet af indbyggere steget igen siden 2008. Kommunen har cirka 50.000 ansatte og er dermed den næststørste arbejdsgiver; kun den danske stat har flere ansatte. Det samlede kommunale budget var i 2010 31,5 milliarder DKK.
