I 1701 bad en række malere den danske hof om tilladelse fra Frederik IV af Danmark til at oprette en akademi. Herfra kom Tegne- og Malerakademiet. Denne kunstakademi var en forgænger til Det Kongelige Danske Akademi for Portrætkunst, som blev åbnet i 1754 på den 31. fødselsdag af kong Frederik V og som siden da har været beliggende i Charlottenborg. I 1771 blev navnet ændret til Det Kongelige Danske Akademi for Maleri, Billedhuggeri og Arkitektur, og i 1814 til Det Kongelige Danske Akademi for Billedkunst. I 1968 blev uddannelsen selvstændig som Den Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi.
Skolen har siden 1974 tre selvstændige institutter: for billedkunst, arkitektur og kunstbevaring. Siden 1996 har skolen for arkitektur været placeret i tidligere marinebygninger i Holmen.
