Ifølge traditionen var det i Iria Flavia, at apostlen Sankt Jakob første gang prædikede under sit ophold i Hispania. Kort efter hans død bragte hans disciple Theodorus og Athanasius hans hoved og krop i en stenbåd fra Jerusalem til Iria. De fastgjorde båden til en pedrón (galicisk for stor sten), deraf det nye toponym, der blev givet til stedet. De to disciple blev i Iria Flavia (nu Padrón) for at prædike, efter at de havde begravet apostlen i Compostela, og den legendariske pedrón kan i dag ses i sognekirken Santiago de Padrón.
